Our History

Where it all started

Our grandparents, Guiseppe and Maria Battaglia, immigrated to Canada at the beginning of the 20th century. Thanks to a loan from a great uncle, they were able to open their first grocery store in the Parkdale area in 1919. Our grandfather passed away in 1932 at the young age of 50. Fortunately, with the help of her two young sons, our grandmother was able to keep the store going. The younger son was our father, Frank Sr., and at eight years old he was making grocery deliveries after school using his toy wagon. At the age of 14, Dad quit school, got his driver’s licence, and began working fulltime in the family market.

Back to our roots

The family stayed at the Parkdale location until 1955, and then spent the next few years building and selling off a series of small businesses. In 1964 they opened a Red and White store on Bloor St. near High Park, and subsequently moved to a significantly larger location at Renforth and Rathburn. After two years of hard work this new store was finally making money. At this point Corporate Head Office got involved in an attempt to claw back some of those profits. Our Dad and Uncle were not impressed and decided to go back to their roots. In 1970 they opened up a fruit store on Clarkson Road North, and stayed there for two years before returning to the Renforth Location under fresh terms.

Mississauga’s
Grocer of Choice

As fortune would have it, the Renforth location lease expired and 1150 Lorne Park Road was beckoning. On February 23, 2001 we opened Battaglia’s Marketplace in the heart of Lorne Park, and have never looked back. Frank Sr. worked right up until he passed away in 2003 at age 79, and was able to see his children keeping up the family tradition. Rumour has it his dying words were “Another case of lettuce is needed on the stand!”

Quotes
The grocery store is in a very convenient location in the neighbour hood, being a 5 minute walk from Lorne Park SS; making it a perfect place for students to purchase lunches or other edibles. They have friendly staff, a wide variety of goods, a in-store butcher and chefs that sell hot meals. Battaglia's is a great store for both students and adults.

I live in Virginia and come to visit family several times a year. Visiting your store is always a delight. The store is clean, the produce is fresh, the staff are friendly and helpful, and the product mix is interesting. I have done a lot of work in the grocery trade during the past 40 years and have been on the board of one of the best food retailers in the US. Your store is an example of what we always strived for.

I’m a very fussy cook and although I have access to a huge variety of food stores, Battaglia’s is the one I use with confidence. The food quality is exceptional and the prices for the most part are very comparable and their specials are excellent. I will only buy my vegetable here. I find the staff helpful and accommodating and in the Spring, they have a lovely display of plants at reasonable prices. I have been using Battaglia’s since they opened and have never had any complaints with the food quality.
